📘 How to Play Chess

Each side starts with 16 pieces; the goal is to attack the enemy king so that it cannot escape — checkmate. Tap a piece and its legal squares appear as green dots, captures as red rings; the game only offers legal moves, so you can never leave your own king in check. Castling, en passant and pawn promotion to a queen happen automatically. Play the computer at three levels or a friend on the same screen.

🧠 What it builds

This game targets strategy, patience and thinking ahead. Short, regular sessions (10-15 minutes a day) work better than one long sitting.

📱 Where it runs

Works in the browser on phone, tablet and desktop — no install, no sign-up. Turn the phone sideways and the layout rearranges itself, keeping every control finger-sized.

🎯 Who it is for

Designed for ages 7-12. Younger children can play with an adult, older ones on their own.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Which rules are included — is it real chess?

Yes, the full rules: castling on both sides, en passant, pawn promotion (automatic queen), check, checkmate, stalemate and the 50-move rule. Illegal moves are impossible; only legal moves are shown.

What do the levels change?

Easy: the computer looks one move ahead and sometimes plays randomly, giving pieces away. Medium: it calculates two moves ahead and spots forks and simple threats. Hard: three moves ahead — a real test for kids.

Why can't some pieces move when my king is in check?

In check, only moves that remove the threat are legal: moving the king, capturing the attacker or blocking. Tapping other pieces shows no targets.

How do I castle?

If the king and rook have not moved, the squares between them are empty and the king is not in check, tap the king and move it to the green dot two squares sideways; the rook jumps over by itself.

How are points awarded?

Captures score by piece value (pawn 2, knight/bishop 6, rook 10, queen 18) and checkmate gives 50. Points collect in the site bar and do not affect the game.
