Mangala is a Turkish mancala game with six pits and one store per player; every pit starts with 4 stones. On your turn pick one of your pits: leave one stone there and sow the rest counter-clockwise one by one (a single stone simply moves to the next pit). If the last stone lands in your store you play again. If it lands in an opponent's pit and makes the count even, you capture all of them. If it lands in your own empty pit, you capture it together with the stones in the opposite pit. When one side runs out of stones the game ends; the remaining stones go to their owners and the fuller store wins.
🧠 What it builds
This game targets counting, planning and strategy. Short, regular sessions (10-15 minutes a day) work better than one long sitting.
📱 Where it runs
Works in the browser on phone, tablet and desktop — no install, no sign-up. Turn the phone sideways and the layout rearranges itself, keeping every control finger-sized.
🎯 Who it is for
Designed for ages 6-12. Younger children can play with an adult, older ones on their own.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Why does one stone stay in the pit?
That is the signature rule of Turkish mangala: one stone from the chosen pit stays put and sowing starts from the next pit. A single stone simply moves one pit forward. This is what makes it different from kalah and other mancala variants.
Do stones ever land in the opponent's store?
No. The opponent's store is skipped while sowing; stones only go into pits and your own store.
How does the "even capture" work?
When your last stone lands in an opponent's pit, count the total there: if it is 2, 4, 6… (even) you capture all of them. If it is odd, the stones stay. Counting before you move is the real fun of the game.
When does the game end, and what about leftover stones?
The game ends when the player to move has an empty side. Leftover stones on both sides go to their owners' stores, and the fuller store wins. There are always 48 stones in total.
How strong is the computer?
It looks a few moves ahead and never misses an extra-turn or even-capture chance. To beat it, play the pits that give you an extra turn first.
