📘 How to Play Lights Out

In Lights Out, your goal is to turn off all the lights in a 5x5 grid. When you tap one light, it changes state along with its immediate neighbors above, below, left, and right. Can you use logic to figure out which squares to tap to extinguish every single bulb?

1. Move your finger or mouse over an open light on the grid that you want to turn off.
2. Tap the square; watch how that specific light and its surrounding neighbors automatically switch states.
3. Observe the new pattern of lights created by your move to identify the next necessary tap.
4. Wait for the victory message once all squares are dark.

Children will struggle with understanding that a single action affects multiple parts of the board simultaneously. They may find it frustrating when their attempt to fix one light accidentally turns on another, teaching them to pause and analyze the consequences before tapping.

Discuss your next move out loud during the game to model logical thinking. Say things like, 'If I tap this corner, the top neighbor will turn off, so let's save that for last' to help them visualize the chain reactions.

• Tapping a corner square is often more effective than tapping the center because it changes fewer neighbors, making the board easier to control.
• If tapping a light turns on two others, look for a common neighbor that can turn both of them off at once.
• Don't try to solve the whole grid in your head; focus on clearing a small group (like a 2x2 block) before moving on.
