Goblins, orcs and mages march down the sandy road toward the castle. You stop them by lining the road with stone towers. Desert Fortress is a pure tower defense game — no economy to manage, every decision is about where to build and when to upgrade.
1. Learn the map
Goblins, orcs and mages walk the sandy road toward the castle. Build towers along the EDGE of the road — you cannot build on the road itself.
2. Build your first tower
Tap an empty spot, then press the TOWER button that appears — your first stone tower costs 60 gold.
3. Upgrade or sell
Tap a built tower: Upgrade moves it to a stronger tier, Sell refunds 60% of what you spent into it.
4. Watch the wave
There is prep time between waves. Once a wave starts, towers fire automatically, and every monster killed drops gold.
5. Prepare for three enemy types
Goblins are fast and weak. Orcs (from wave 3) are slow but tough. Mages (from wave 6) are the fastest of all.
6. Clear all 15 waves
The campaign runs exactly 15 waves. Survive them all and the castle wins.
What to expect at this age
A 7-8 year old usually spends the first gold on a tower right away and learns to wait. Around age 9-10 the idea that "a tower closer to a bend sees the enemy longer" clicks. By 11-13 the real question sharpens: build a new tower or upgrade an existing one? The game never forces this, but a player who places only 3 towers and never upgrades stalls around wave 8-9.
At home and in class
Works well taking turns: one child picks the spot, another presses the TOWER button, a third watches the wave. Asking "which tower killed the most, and why?" after each wave turns into real thinking about placement. At 15 waves it also suits splitting the campaign across more than one sitting.
Tips
- Build near a BEND in the road — enemies stay in range longer there.
- Upgrading a few towers to the top tier usually beats a single-tier tower on every spot.
- Orcs start appearing from wave 3, mages from wave 6 — no need to panic in the early waves.
- Selling refunds 60% of what you spent, so moving a badly placed tower is cheap.
- There is no rush during prep time between waves — plan as long as you like.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is Desert Fortress free?
Yes. Completely free, ad-free, no account needed. Opens in the browser, no install.
What age is it for?
Ages 7-13. Deciding where to place a tower and when to upgrade it is simple planning with little reading required.
Does it work on phones?
Yes, but LANDSCAPE ONLY — holding the phone upright shows a prompt asking you to rotate it. Tap to build, upgrade or sell towers.
How long does it take?
A 15-wave campaign takes roughly 12-18 minutes; the prep time between waves lets you take as long as you want to plan.
Does it save progress?
No, progress is not saved — refreshing the page starts over. Whether the castle falls or wins, a restart button takes you into a new game.
Can you actually finish all 15 waves?
Yes. In our own testing, a player who upgrades 10 towers in time carries the castle to wave 15 without taking damage; a playstyle that builds only 3 towers and never upgrades them stalls around wave 8-9 — tower COUNT and upgrade timing both matter.
